How to Compare Overhead Crane Manufacturers Beyond Purchase Price
Comparing overhead crane manufacturers? Evaluate duty class, components, exclusions, controls, maintenance access, serviceability, lifecycle cost and technical compliance — not price alone.

Companies buying an overhead crane commonly request quotations from several crane manufacturers, then compare price, delivery and a handful of headline specifications.
The problem is simple and expensive: three quotations can all say "10-ton double-girder overhead crane" while describing substantially different machines. Different duty class, different hoist, different drives, different scope, different lifecycle.
Here is what should actually be compared.
1. Compare the requirement first
Before comparing suppliers, confirm every supplier is quoting the same requirement:
- rated capacity, including any below-the-hook device weight
- span and runway configuration
- CMAA duty class specified
- actual operating duty — lifts per hour, average load, shift pattern
- environment: heat, dust, moisture, corrosives, classified areas
- hoist, trolley and bridge speeds (and whether variable)
- lift height and required hook approach
- control method: pendant, radio, cab, remote station
- electrification type
- maintenance access — platforms, walkways, service positions
- operating requirements: tandem lifts, precise spotting, process cycles
- future production requirements over the asset's life

2. Compare the equipment
Two cranes at the same rating can be built very differently:
- hoist configuration: wire rope vs chain, single vs double reeving, drum design
- motors: type, insulation class, service factor, duty rating
- brakes: hoist, trolley and bridge — type, redundancy, adjustment access
- gearboxes: sealed vs splash, service factor, rebuild support
- wheels and bearings: material, hardness, replacement method
- drives and VFD platform: open vs proprietary, parameter access, diagnostics
- controls architecture: relay, PLC, safety PLC
- radio system: frequency, redundancy, spares availability

- serviceability: can your team reach and change the components that wear?
3. Compare the scope — this is where bids diverge most
The largest cost differences between crane quotations are usually not in the crane. They are in what each supplier excluded. Confirm, line by line, who carries:
- freight to site
- unloading and site handling
- installation labour and equipment
- runway interface and any runway modification
- electrical feed, disconnects and power drop
- commissioning
- load testing and certification
- permits
- engineering and stamped drawings
- documentation and O&M manuals
- operator and maintenance training
- recommended and commissioning spare parts
- warranty term, coverage and travel during warranty
- taxes and duties
- travel, accommodation and per-diem
- stated exclusions

4. Compare lifecycle value
The purchase is a fraction of the total cost. Weigh:
- parts availability and typical lead times
- North American service support and coverage in your region
- component standardization vs proprietary parts
- diagnostic capability and whether your team can access it
- maintenance requirements and required specialty labour
- expected downtime for routine service
- controls obsolescence horizon
- future modernization capability — can this crane be upgraded in 15 years?

5. Compare technical compliance
Confirm each proposal states, in writing, compliance with the standards that apply: CMAA 70/74 for the crane, ASME B30.2 / B30.16 / B30.17 for operation and hoists, CSA B167 in Canada plus the applicable provincial requirements, and NFPA 70/70E or CEC for the electrical scope. "Meets applicable standards" is not a compliance statement.
Crane manufacturers should compete to supply the crane. CAG helps make sure they are competing against the same requirement.
Good manufacturers welcome a clear specification — it protects them from being underbid by a lighter machine. The buyer's job is to make the comparison honest.
Compare crane proposals
If you are holding two or three quotations right now and they do not look comparable, they probably are not. We normalize proposals to a common technical basis, identify the exclusions, and give you a written recommendation you can take to your approval process.
Keep the suppliers you like. Add an independent perspective before the purchase order goes out.

- Usually because the duty class, hoist and drive selection, or scope of supply differ. Freight, installation, runway interface, electrical feed, commissioning, load testing, training and spares are commonly excluded from a low base price.
- What duty class should I specify for an overhead crane?
- Duty class should reflect how the crane will actually be used — lifts per hour, average load as a percentage of rated capacity, and shift pattern — not the lightest class that meets the rating. Under-classing is the most common and most expensive specification error.
- Should I buy from the lowest overhead crane bidder?
- Only after confirming all bidders quoted the same requirement and scope. The lowest purchase price frequently carries the highest lifecycle cost once exclusions, parts availability, serviceability and controls obsolescence are accounted for.
