CSA B167 Part 6 sets the framework — frequent (daily/shift) pre-operational checks, periodic documented inspections, and a comprehensive annual — but the standard deliberately leaves interval and scope to the owner's judgment based on service class and environment. That judgment is exactly where owners without dedicated crane expertise leave value on the table. We deliver a PM program that is defensible, executable, and calibrated to the way your cranes actually get used.

A good PM program is service-class-aware. A Class A standby maintenance crane and a Class E steel-mill ladle crane cannot share the same interval matrix, task list, or spare-parts strategy — but in practice, many facilities run all of their cranes on whatever the last inspection contractor happened to propose. We rebuild the program from first principles: duty cycle observed on site, environment (heat, dust, chemistry, cold), OEM manual requirements, and the applicable clauses of CSA B167 Part 6 and CMAA 70/74.

How much does an overhead crane maintenance program cost to run?
It depends on crane count, duty class, and environment. The planning work is one-time; ongoing cost is inspection labour and parts, which a properly tiered program usually reduces by cutting unplanned downtime and emergency call-outs.
Can you build a program for cranes from multiple manufacturers?
Yes. Vendor-neutral programs are our normal case — mixed fleets are combined into one schedule, one record format, and one set of intervals per duty class.
What records do auditors and insurers expect?
Dated inspection records tied to each crane's identity, the name and qualification of the person performing them, deficiencies found, and evidence of corrective action. A program without closed-loop deficiency tracking is the most common audit finding.
Does CAG perform crane inspections?
No. We are strictly consulting. We design the program, then your team or a qualified inspection contractor executes it. We can also review the reports the contractor produces to confirm scope was actually completed.
How often should an overhead crane be inspected?

CSA B167 addresses inspection and maintenance of overhead cranes by competent persons on a documented schedule appropriate to their use, and the specific obligation depends on the applicable provincial regulatory requirements and adopted edition for your jurisdiction. In practice, meeting that expectation without a written PM program is difficult to demonstrate in an audit or after an incident.
How does CMAA service class affect PM intervals?
CMAA Classes A–F describe duty severity. A Class A standby crane may only need semi-annual periodic inspection, while a Class E or F process crane typically needs monthly periodic inspection and shorter overhaul cycles on brakes, ropes, wheels, and drive components.
Can CAG audit or rebuild a PM program we already have?
Yes. That is a common engagement. We benchmark the existing program against CSA B167 Part 6, CMAA, ASME B30.2 and OEM requirements, identify gaps, then either produce a remediation plan or rewrite the program in full.
Do we still need our OEM or a service contractor if you build the program?
Yes — CAG does not execute inspection or repair. What changes is that the contractor works to a scope you own, with deliverables that are clear and comparable at re-bid. Most clients see contractor pricing tighten materially at the next tender.
How long does it take to build a PM program?
A single-crane program is typically two to four weeks including a site visit. A fleet-wide program at a manufacturing or process site is generally six to twelve weeks depending on crane count, access, and how much record-history exists to work from.
