Five Overhead Crane Specification Mistakes That Cost Owners the Most

Recurring specification errors we see on client projects — from wrong duty class to missing spare-parts commitments — and what to write instead.

Most crane specifications we peer-review contain the same handful of mistakes. Each of them is small on the page and expensive across the life of the asset. If you're about to release a spec to bid, run this list first.

1. Copying the last spec

The single most common mistake. The last crane's spec fit the last crane's production plan — five years ago, before the new mill line was added, before the takt time changed, before the load-out schedule shifted. Copying it locks in yesterday's assumptions for the next 30 years.

Write instead: Rebase duty-cycle assumptions against current production data before touching the spec.

2. Wrong CMAA service class

Covered in our companion post on CMAA service class — this deserves its own line item. Buying a Class C crane and running it at Class D duty is the most expensive way to save 8 percent on a purchase. An independent specification review catches this before bid.

Write instead: Class calculated from load spectrum and cycle count, not copied.

3. No performance guarantees on wheel life, brake life, or availability

If the spec doesn't require the vendor to guarantee wheel life at design load and duty, the vendor will optimize for first-cost. Wheels are then a warranty problem, not a design problem.

Write instead: Wheel life, brake life, and crane availability guarantees written into the commercial terms.

4. Missing spare-parts commitment

Modern crane controls are software-defined and vendor-locked. A five-year spare-parts commitment is not enough for a 30-year asset. When the vendor sunsets the drive family, you have a stranded asset unless the spec forced open-market equivalents.

Write instead: Twenty-year spare-parts availability guarantee, with named acceptable substitutes for major electrical components.

5. No commissioning acceptance criteria

The spec says "commission the crane." The vendor arrives, powers it up, cycles it a few times, and hands over the keys. Six months later the operators are logging faults the vendor won't acknowledge because there's no baseline.

Write instead: Written commissioning acceptance protocol — 40-hour load cycling, defined fault-free duration, documented electrical values, documented brake performance.

The point

A specification is a legal document that governs a 30-year asset. Ten hours of independent peer-review at the specification stage is the highest-ROI spend you'll make on the entire project. It protects the capital and it protects the operations team who inherits the crane.
