A different cost structure than asking your crane supplier. Our work is advisory-only and scoped and quoted before it starts. There is no equipment margin, parts markup or service agreement attached to the advice — and a scoped review is a small line item next to the capital purchase, modernization or multi-year contract it is reviewing.

"Should we modernize or replace?" is the single most common question we hear from asset owners. The honest answer is: it depends — but the decision usually comes down to four inputs.

1. Structural condition

If the bridge, end trucks and runway are structurally sound and within their fatigue life, modernization is on the table. If not, you're buying a new crane whether you like it or not.

2. Duty cycle vs. original design class

Cranes designed for CMAA Class C running as Class D or E are candidates for replacement, not modernization. Upgrading controls on an under-classed structure is throwing money at the wrong problem.

3. Parts and OEM support

Obsolete controls, unavailable drives, and unsupported PLCs push the economics toward modernization. But only when the structure justifies the investment.

4. Downtime tolerance

A full replacement is typically 2–4x the outage window of a modernization. For 24/7 operations, that math often decides the question on its own.

Frequently asked questions

When is modernization better than replacing an overhead crane?
When the structure and runway are sound and the limitation is in drives, controls, hoisting machinery or safety devices. Modernization avoids structural and installation cost and usually shortens outage duration.
When is replacement the better decision?
When structural condition, capacity, span, duty class or process requirements have outgrown the existing crane, or when cumulative modernization cost approaches replacement cost without solving the underlying limitation.
What information is needed to make the decision defensibly?
Condition assessment of structure and runway, duty and utilization data, maintenance and downtime history, parts availability and the process requirement over the intended remaining life.
