Frequencies, scopes and documentation requirements for overhead crane inspection — written for the owner who signs the contract, not the contractor who bids it.

Which requirements actually apply

Canadian overhead crane requirements vary by jurisdiction, equipment type and workplace. Provincial regulations may incorporate specific editions of CSA B167 or other standards, while owner and site requirements can be more stringent. Daily to monthly

Operator-level pre-use checks — controls, brakes, limit devices, hooks, wire rope, warning devices. Visual and functional, no formal documentation beyond a defect log.

Periodic

1 to 12 months

Documented inspection by a qualified inspector. Scope tightens with CMAA service class. Structural, mechanical, electrical, safety devices, running surfaces. Report signed and retained.

Annual Comprehensive

Every 12 months

Deepest scope. Structural measurements, wire-rope inspection, brake and hoist teardown as required, load testing where applicable. Written report with photos, measurements and defect closure plan.

CMAA service class → interval

One schedule does not fit every overhead crane.

A Class B maintenance-bay crane and a Class F hot-metal crane share a standard but not a schedule. CMAA 70/74 defines six service classes (A through F) tied to duty cycle and load spectrum. The higher the class, the tighter the periodic interval and the deeper the comprehensive annual scope.

  • Class A — standby / infrequent (powerhouse, transformer bays): periodic quarterly, annual full scope.
  • Class B — light service (repair shops, light assembly): periodic quarterly, annual full scope.
  • Class C — moderate service (machine shops, paper mill machine rooms): periodic monthly, annual full scope with wire-rope focus.
  • Class D — heavy service (heavy machine shops, foundries, fabricating plants): periodic monthly, annual with structural measurements.
  • Class E — severe service (cement mills, lumber mills, container yards): periodic bi-weekly to monthly, annual with load test as warranted.
  • Class F — continuous severe (steel mills, hot-metal, scrap yards): periodic weekly to bi-weekly, annual with structural, wire-rope and load-test discipline.

Environmental severity — heat, dust, corrosion, wash-down — tightens interval further within each class. That calibration is the job of your inspection program, not the checklist.

CSA B167 — Canada

OSHA 1910.179 + ASME B30.2 — United States

OSHA 1910.179 is the federal regulation; ASME B30.2 is the consensus standard OSHA references for top-running bridge crane safety. B30.11 covers monorails and under-hung; B30.16 covers overhead hoists; B30.17 covers under-running single-girder cranes.

MSHA-regulated mining sites in the US layer 30 CFR requirements on top of the applicable B30 volume. Multi-national owners typically write one internal program to the stricter standard and apply it fleet-wide.

How often should an overhead crane be inspected?
Every governing standard — CSA B167, OSHA 1910.179 and ASME B30.2 — requires three tiers: frequent (daily to monthly, operator-level pre-use checks), periodic documented inspections (typically 1 to 12 months based on service class), and a comprehensive annual inspection performed by a qualified inspector. Interval within each tier is tightened for higher CMAA service class and harsher environments.
What is the difference between frequent, periodic and annual inspections?
Frequent inspections are visual and functional checks performed by the operator before each shift or use — no documentation required beyond a defect log. Periodic inspections are documented, performed at defined intervals by a qualified inspector, and cover a broader mechanical and electrical scope. The comprehensive annual (sometimes called a thorough or major inspection) is the deepest scope — structural measurements, wire-rope inspection, brake and hoist teardown as required, and full documentation.
Who qualifies as a qualified crane inspector?
A qualified inspector has documented training, demonstrable experience on the specific equipment type, and — under the current edition of CSA B167 — the ability to interpret findings against the governing standard. Generic millwright or trade credentials are not sufficient on their own. Third-party contractors should provide inspector qualification records as part of their scope of work.
What does an overhead crane inspection cost?
There is no fixed answer — cost varies by service class, span, height, number of hoists, and whether the annual comprehensive requires load testing. A more useful question is whether the scope your contractor is delivering matches the standard your program is written to. That is where an independent inspection program consultant adds value.
Is CSA B167 or OSHA 1910.179 the governing standard for my facility?
Canadian facilities are governed by provincial OH&S regulations, which reference CSA B167 as the standard of care. US facilities are governed by OSHA 1910.179 with ASME B30.2 as the referenced consensus standard. Multi-national owners typically write one internal program that satisfies the stricter of the applicable standards site-by-site.
What should an inspection report contain?

Checkbox-only reports without narrative or photos will not survive an audit against the current edition of CSA B167 or an insurance loss investigation.
