Foundry crane specification is where the small differences matter: dual-load-path hoisting on ladle cranes, redundant holding brakes, thermally-rated wire rope, heat shielding on bridge girders, and controls that cannot drift under a full ladle. Getting those items right at specification time is far cheaper than retrofitting them after a near-miss. CAG has worked with iron, steel, aluminum and non-ferrous foundry operators — from jobbing shops running a single ladle to captive foundries inside integrated mills — on ladle and pouring cranes, EAF charging cranes, shakeout and mould-handling, and scrap-yard magnets.
The most common gap we see in foundry PM programs is a periodic-inspection schedule written for a general-industry crane instead of for a hot-metal duty. ASME B30.2's periodic-inspection table gets shortened significantly for Class E and F service, and specific molten-metal items — brake linings, rope condition, thermal-sensor function, hook-fatigue indicators — belong on a foundry-specific frequent-inspection card. CAG rebuilds both the master document and the CMMS content to reflect that duty.
For modernizations, the highest-leverage single decision is usually the drive and brake package. Legacy DC drives with drum brakes are increasingly hard to service and rarely deliver the fine speed control a modern pour operation expects. A staged upgrade to AC VFD with redundant holding brakes typically pays back in reduced scrap, better ladle placement, and fewer near-misses within the first campaign after startup.

- Do you work on ladle and pouring cranes specifically?
- Yes. Ladle and pouring cranes are one of our core deliverables — specification, bid review, single-failure-proof feature verification, and remaining-life assessment. We are equally comfortable on captive foundry cranes inside an integrated mill and on jobbing-shop cranes at a single-ladle operation.
- What is AIST TR-6 and when does it apply?
- AIST Technical Report No. 6 is the industry reference for electric-arc-furnace charging cranes. It governs duty, structural design and mechanical requirements for one of the most severe overhead crane services in existence. Any EAF charging-crane specification or bid evaluation we do in North America is written against TR-6.
- Can you assess remaining fatigue life on a legacy hot-metal crane?
- Yes — coordinated with a qualified third-party structural inspector. We interpret the inspection findings and OEM data into a business case with a defensible remaining-life projection, so the owner can plan modernization or replacement on a real timeline rather than reactively after a downtime event.
- Do you handle aluminum and non-ferrous foundry work?
- Yes. Aluminum, brass, bronze and zinc foundries carry different duty profiles and different atmospheric concerns than iron and steel foundries, but the specification and PM discipline transfers cleanly. Our engagements cover all common ferrous and non-ferrous casting operations.
- What do insurers typically flag in foundry crane programs?
- The most common insurer findings are outdated PM cadence for Class E/F duty, missing single-failure-proof feature verification on molten-metal lifts, gaps in load-test records after any drive or brake modification, and operator-qualification records that reference a generic OEM certificate rather than ASME B30.2 Chapter 2-3 competencies. Our reports address these findings directly and in the format the carriers expect.
